Intention In Action

Loving kindness becomes skillful action through service to others

Consciousness

"Without taking consciousness into account we could not have formulated quantum theory in a fully consistent way."

Albert Einstein.

Minute by minute the volatile conscious state arises and is modified by our fluctuating intentions towards completing different tasks – from the mundane to the charitable to the spiritual. We intend to have a pleasurable cup of tea, we compassionately intend to help a friend, we mindfully intend to meditate.

Each time we repeat a conscious action it becomes established in the mind as a valid reference point for future behaviour.

For example if you drive your car to work each morning you don't have to constantly remind yourself what you are doing - which direction to turn and so on. In many cases our intention completes the act without needing our focused attention.

We can say that effectiveness of intention increases as our attention decreases.

Once we form an intention it completes itself. We do not need to keep reminding ourselves. ‘I am driving my car’, ‘I am making a cup of coffee’, ‘I am walking to the post box’.

Intentional Healing recognises this powerful truth. Once an intention is formed to help another person then there is no longer need to continually repeat the formed intention.

However the mind (attention) and the higher consciousness (intention), have heavy resistance to simply allowing changes to occur.

The ancient witchdoctors knew this and to reduce that resistance they took adopted exotic personae. Their painted faces, feather head-dresses and various chants were to confuse and occupy the conscious mind, effectively short-circuiting the patient's ingrained ways seeing things.

The Mind Music CD is a modern equivalent. With it's distinctive chant and the interwoven spoken words it gives 'space' for both the left and right brains to relax, unlocking past unwanted patterns.

This is what is meant by 'intentional healing'. First, it is necessary to form the 'wish' to help without attaching it to a specific outcome. Then, fully aware that you cannot know exactly what the 'patient' needs for their benefit, you must allow the greater force of life itself take over. You become no more than the catalyst for an action outside of your control.

Compassion without skilful action remains impotent pity. The most powerful skilful action seems to be in letting go of the desire for action.
